For years I have got by using a Canon EF-M 55-200mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM. On my old Canon EOS 70D, with its cropped sensor, I got a 1.6x multiplier. A 320mm telephoto, whilst not a sports or wildlife lens, was a stop gap. Of course, when I upgraded to a full sensor, I lost that extra 120mm, or did I? No, of course I didn't lose it, I just needed to crop my photo to the same size of my cropped sensor!
After much research - first of all looking at the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary lens quickly followed by the upgraded Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Sports, I decided on the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3. However, after a conversation with a camera club friend, he persuaded me to switch to the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and use a 1.4x teleconverter when wanting to go beyond the 400mm; the teleconverter takes me to up 560mm but also loses one stop of light. While I own both Tamron and Sigma lenses and am delighted with them, I went with the Canon because:
- it is a much faster lens
- IMHO it gives a better image quality
- it is lighter in weight
The weather has not been great since I got the lens in Feburary. A trip to Monmouthshire last month failed to give any opportunties to use the lens properly. So, these were some shots from my first trip to test out the lens in Feburary. I look forward to getting out with the lens this summer for both wildlife and sport.
Lovin' the superb, new wildlife shots Faruk. Can't wait to see the even wilder one's from Fitz...😉 Cheers 🍻
