Hunting Wren with Two Insects

Updated: Nov 23, 2023

During June and half of July from dawn to dusk we could hear the continuous chirp of our resident wren. He had a brood in the nextdoor garden and was spending every moment of the day hunting for insects to keep them satisfied.

Whenever I went into the garden, he was there working. He was a diligent and hard worker, and could be seen and heard working his territory constantly. And then I went away for a few days in July and when I returned he was gone. I'm sure he is lurking somewhere, but he is no longer visible. Certainly not in the dominate way he had been.

I photographed him across a number of weeks. He would flit around and was completely impossible to follow with a telephoto lens until he stopped for a rest. Fortunately, while resting, he would continue to let anyone, any other creature, that it was his territory and he was about. It was in these moments I would track him down for photography.

After many photos, I was finally rewarded with these of him resting whilst hunting. Our hunting wren had two insects. In his beak was a spider and a greenbug, possibly a shieldbug. If you do know what it is please let me know. Our hunting wren had two insects. And all the while, he was still belting out his territorial chirp.
